What is Universal Tracer?

    Universal Tracer provides convenient and simple way to trace the communications between a mobile handset and (U)SIM to ensure the interoperability between these 2 entities.

Is Universal Tracer the new product to replace the Views Detective?

    Yes, VIEWS Detective will soon obsolete, and replaced by Universal Tracer.

What are the differences between the Views Detective and Universal Tracer?

    Comparing to old product, namely VIEWS Detective, Universal Tracer provides more functionalities as per shown in table below:-

Can I use the connectors and adaptors of Views Detective on Universal Tracer?

    YES

    Both the products use the same hardware (Mobile-SIM Connector, Mobile SIM Connector Probes and Smart Adaptor). The only difference is in software.

Does Universal Tracer support old Mobile-SIM Connector with RS-232 connector?

    NO.

    Universal Tracer does not support this obsoleted connector. You need to upgrade to Mobile-SIM Connector with USB. This new connector can be purchased from Gemalto Web Store.

What’s new in the trace interpretation of this new tracer?

    Universal Tracer enables interpretation of the traces captured by through interpretation modules. The communication translation can be customized depending on user’s preferences, by configuring the interpretation modules selection and arrangement. APIs for interpretation modules are made public, these enable users to create interpretation modules themselves and share among each other.

Can I perform the multiple tracings using the Universal Tracer?

    YES.

    Universal Tracer allows multiple tracing sessions. User can switch from 1 to another easily.

What are the hardware and software requirements for installing Universal Tracer?

  • Hardware Requirements

    The following hardware is required to use the Universal Tracer:
    A workstation with:

    - Intel® Pentium® 4 processor, 2.0 GHz or faster

    - A minimum of 1 GB of RAM (2 GB is recommended)
    - 400 MB of available disk space for installation
    - USB compliant port (USB 2.0 or higher is recommended)
    A data source (such as the mobile-SIM connector (MSC), PC/SC-compatible smartcard reader or card simulator)
    A set of four probes for MSC
    A (U)SIM card adaptor
    A Smart adaptor (The usage of this hardware is only required when tracing is done using other smartcard reader)
  • Software Requirements

    Universal Tracer runs under:

    - Microsoft® Windows XP with Service Pack 2 (32-bit)

    - Microsoft® Windows Vista (32-bit)

Is there any free upgrade for the existing Views Detective user to the Universal Tracer?

    Free upgrade is available from 1st Oct 2009 till 31st Dec 2009. Existing VIEWS Detective user will be given free Universal Tracer 2-years license. After 31st Dec 2009, any license request will be charged with price of 600 Euros for 1 license of 2 years.

Is Universal Tracer available for Live Update?

    YES.

    With Live Update, you can upgrade your Universal Tracer and check the latest news about this product.

    What is Live Update?

    Live Update is a solution for Gemalto Tools products update management that allows optimization of product distribution and acceleration of user adoption to new version of a product.

Any free evaluation kit is available for the customer for trial?

    YES.

    NOTE: This kit does not come with hardware. Thus, user can only evaluate communication tracing in PC/SC card readers and card simulators. Tracing between handset and (U)SIM is not possible unless user purchase the hardware needed.

How to place order for the Universal Tracer?

  • Universal Tracer Enterprise Kit

    New user is encourage to purchase Universal Tracer Enterprise kit. The enterprise kit will be delivered with a box containing the software on a CD as well as a Card Reader, hardware and 2 Years License. The Universal Tracer Enterprise Kit is available on the Gemalto Web Store in the 'Kits & Software' section.

  • Universal Tracer - 2 years license

    Upon license expiration, you may purchase Universal Tracer – 2 years license.

    Note that there will be NO physical delivery of this order as it is just a electronic license delivery upon request.

    First, download the Universal Tracer from Gemalto Developer Network. Then, log on to the Gemalto Web Store in the 'Kits & Software' section to buy a 2 Years License. Once the transaction has been confirmed, an invoice will be sent to you and Gemalto will contact you to help you with the License Activation Process.

In term of licensing, how many years of license are provided to the users?

    Universal Tracer is sold with a 2 years license. New users is encourage to purchase Universal Enterprise Kit, which comes with 2 years license. At the end of the 2 years license customer can buy a 2 years license extension, namely Universal Tracer – 2 years license at Gemalto Web Store.

    Note: License is needed only for the users who need to create new traces. NO license needed for users to read or interpret existing traces.

How to place an order for Universal Tracer hardware module?

    You can order the Universal Tracer hardware module from Gemalto Web Store through the 'Kits & Software’ section. Click on related products of the Universal Tracer ordering page.

What is the activation process for the Universal Tracer license?

    Upon successful installation of Universal Tracer, you will have instant access to the Evaluation Version of 20 days. Gemalto will contact you to help you with the License Activation Process.

Who is the product Manager for Universal Tracer?

What is the warranty condition for Universal Tracer hardware module?

    One year warranty is applicable for only Mobile-SIM Connector hardware from the date of purchase.

Do I need to uninstall the Views Detective before install the Universal Tracer?

    YES.

    You need uninstall the Views Detective before running the set up. If the Views Detective is not uninstalled, the Universal Tracer set up will detect it and ask for uninstallation.

No trace was captured in Universal Tracer for Handset-Card tracing using Mobile SIM Connector. What is the troubleshooting steps?

    Tacer session must be started before the handset being powered on to allow the MSC to record the PPS speed.

    Follow the following step to troubleshoot:

    1. Close the current tracing session, power off the handset.

    2. Reset the MSC by pressing the red button on the hardware.
    3. In Universal Tracer, start a new tracing session.
    4. Power on the handset.
